Shelter - its decision time

Shelter

Shelter is the housing and homelessness charity. Our aim is simple: so one day, no one will need to turn to us for help.

We are Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity helping people impacted by the housing emergency through advice, support, legal services and campaigning for a fairer housing future, so one day, households won’t need to turn to us for help.

Shelter

Why are we needed?

We are in a housing emergency.

Record numbers of people are experiencing homelessness. Private rents are rising faster than wages, and too few social homes are being built. As a result, many households are living in unsuitable or unsafe accommodation, often for long periods of time.

In England, a household becomes homeless every three minutes.

More than 172,000 children are homeless and living in temporary accommodation, the highest number since records began in 2004.

In Scotland, 31% of households were living in fuel poverty in 2022, up from 24% in 2019.

Behind these figures are families, individuals and children whose health, stability and opportunities are being shaped by the lack of a safe place to call home.

Our Impact

Shelter combines frontline support with long-term campaigning to create lasting change.

Our work on renters’ rights has led to the Renters’ Rights Act becoming law. From 1 May 2026, this will give renters stronger protection from discrimination, greater security, and longer notice periods for tenancy changes.

Alongside national campaigning, our advisers and solicitors continue to support people every day, helping them navigate housing problems that are often complex, urgent and deeply distressing.

Working with the hospitality sector

Hospitality businesses can play a practical role in supporting people experiencing homelessness, particularly at a local level.

Some organisations work with their local council to make accommodation available for temporary housing during off-season periods. Others support Shelter through fundraising, events or by amplifying campaigns that push for long-term change.

Shelter works with organisations of all sizes and offers guidance for those who want to get involved in a way that is responsible, ethical and genuinely helpful.

Why Holidaymaker is supporting Shelter

At Holidaymaker, we work with hospitality businesses that are deeply connected to their local communities. Housing insecurity increasingly affects those communities, including the people who work in and around hospitality.

Shelter’s work is practical, local and grounded in lived experience. They support people facing housing crisis today, while campaigning for the long-term changes needed to prevent homelessness.

We’re supporting Shelter this year because a resilient hospitality sector depends on stable, supported communities, and because their approach aligns with the values of many of the operators we work with.
